Argentina raises the stakes in international legal fight with creditors

Argentina’s 11-year battle with creditors who are demanding debt payment in full is set to intensify, after the government in Buenos Aires took its case to the US Supreme Court. The battle brings into sharp focus the rights of a sovereign nation to use its funds as it wishes against the rule of international contractual law on debt repayment. The final ruling, when it comes, is being closely watched by European countries which have entered into debt repayment deals with the European Union.
