Opinion: Failed experiments in EU foreign policy

While many are quick to blame excessive nationalism for the European Union’s failure to come up with a unified defense and foreign policy, the situation is more complex. European states have different economic and geopolitical interests, and little to gain by giving them up for the sake of integration. Proponents of centralization will likely need to adopt a more realistic approach, lest the union become even more fractured.
