The cool-headed handling by China and Japan of recent incidents concerning the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, especially the provocations of nationalist ‘activists’ on both sides, and the purchase of three islands by the Japanese government, underlines that the two powers understand that each would lose out from any escalation of the conflict. Japan is dealing with China’s rise to power and Tokyo has had an accommodating response to Beijing’s demands in the areas of territorial integrity and economic development.
