China has joined the influx of new Antarctic players and is seeking to increase its status and influence on the Earth’s last unexploited continent. It is building its fourth research station and planning a fifth and is increasing its presence ‘to protect its polar rights’, according to China's Arctic and Antarctic administration. China has clearly signalled its interest in the region – but its long-term goals are not entirely clear to Western observers.
