Politicians are using the European Union and the euro currency to raise their profile and popularity by blaming them for national ills. This scapegoating diverts attention from the real issues. But Europe’s politicians lack the courage and vision in the short term to take the major step to leave the EU or the euro currency.

Voters in Italy have left the country in political deadlock, with no clear election winner with a mandate to resolve the country’s economic problems. Now the political future rests in the hands of former comedian Beppe Grillo, who leads a movement which is against the euro, austerity and old style politics but with no programme to tackle Italy’s difficulties.
