Donald Tusk has been prime minister of Poland since 2007 and was planning a third term until he was selected to lead the European Council. He has been described as populist, ruthless, charismatic and politically flexible. In his new role, Mr Tusk, an able negotiator, will use his interpersonal skills to build coalitions and strike compromises. He is said to have a close working relationship with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and will want to keep Russia as far away from central and eastern Europe as possible.
