Europe’s defence industries need a united political solution for corporate survival

European governments are facing new challenges to protect prosperity and coherence in a global environment where military force is becoming more apparent. It is against this background - and the strategic military contraction of the United States - that Europe has to develop a strategic autonomy. There is a critical need to keep a sufficient European industrial and technological base alive to provide for Europe’s military needs. The streamlining of EADS - renamed Airbus Group - could be a milestone on the path to change, even though there will be continuing political obstacles along the way.
