The United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union has thrown the future of the bloc into question. It has brought a fundamental contradiction to the fore – one that has emerged over recent years and can now no longer be ignored. While the knee-jerk reaction of the political establishment in Brussels has been to meet every new problem with calls for more centralized powers, an increasing number of Europeans view Brussels as the problem rather than the solution.
