French presidential election: Candidates on campaign trail play to 'Made in France' theme
France goes to the polls for the first round of the presidential elections on April 22, with Europe in the grip of financial crisis and unemployment in France at a record 12-year high. It means candidates are focussing on vote-catching themes, such as protectionism and anti-globalisation, rather than on what experts say are the root causes of the country’s problems such as the the lack of competitiveness of French businesses, regulating public finances, and questions over the responsibility of banks.
POLLS for the forthcoming presidential election put the Socialist Party candidate, Francois Hollande in the lead, well ahead of the incumbent president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
