Nicolas Sarkozy is fighting to hold on to the keys of the Elysee Palace as France goes to the polls in a two-round election to be held on April 22 and May 6, 2012. This report looks at the men and women vying for his seat and considers whether the leading candidates have got what it takes to lead a country of nearly 66 million mired in the eurozone crisis which threatens France's economic well-being.

<b>NICOLAS SARKOZY,</b> 57, was elected president of the French Republic in May 2007. He succeeded Jacques Chirac and, supported by the centre-right Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (UMP), promised the country a dynamic new start.
