A Tunisian man burned himself to death in protest at his treatment by police and sparked pro-democracy rebellions across the Middle East. That was nearly two years ago and the West welcomed what it saw as a move towards democracy and freedom of religion and speech. But the revolutions have strengthened the influence of Sunni Islamists who reject these values. While the United States seems to accept this, is it time for Europe to consider a different stance?
