Huge reserves of natural gas discovered off the coast of Israel have been described as an historic opportunity for the energy-challenged country. Deepwater gas fields discovered in 2009 and 2010 could make Israel a major player in the Mediterranean natural gas market while supplying its population and industry with cheap, clean energy for a generation. But the export potential – especially to Israel’s Arab neighbours – is fraught with problems and could take sometime to materialise.
