A solution to the Iranian nuclear problem and the peace process between Israel and Palestine is no nearer but there are signs of progress. US policies on the wider Middle East are changing and Israel’s stance on the nuclear issue is bound to relax. Turkey is assuming a mediating role in both cases, with America’s support. The Israeli agenda will reflect its new cabinet and the increasing public climate for a new approach to the West Bank. This will be conducive to US interests given their priorities for rebuilding domestic strength and meeting challenges in the West Pacific. This will, in turn, influence outcomes in the wider Middle East.
