Long shadow falls over South Africa’s politics
The horror of South African police shooting into a crowd of striking miners killing 34 and seriously injuring 78 could have long-term political ramifications for its president Jacob Zuma and for the country. Further outrage was caused when the 270 protesting miners were initially arrested and charged with the murder of their colleagues. Even though these charges were dropped later the incident will cause greater scrutiny of South Africa’s leaders and its politics.
