Malaysia prepares for ‘crucial’ general election

Malaysia’s parliamentary elections on May 5, 2013, are the most crucial since the country gained independence in 1957. The fight is between the opposition party People’s Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat) and the ruling National Front (Barisan Nasional) – which has been in power since Malaysia’s inception. And for the first time, there is a chance that the opposition, running on issues of transparency, economic equity and social justice, could defeat the world’s longest continually-elected political coalition.
