Ethiopia’s economic performance is among the best in Africa although it has a lack of natural resources. It achieved political stability under long-serving prime minister Meles Zenawi. But his death in August 2012 cast doubts about the future until his successor received universal support to take the country forward.

The death of Ethiopia’s strongman leader, Meles Zenawi, has not just left a potential power vacuum inside the country, it has also raised concerns about its stability in a region which is notoriously unstable. Zenawi may yet have a hand in what happens in Ethiopia, as it was he who put the mechanism for his succession into the country’s constitution.
