Mozambique’s gas reserves promise an economic boom

Vast reserves of natural gas - sufficient to meet eight per cent of global demand - along with rich coal resources, promise one of Africa’s poorest countries an economic boom. International companies are promising billions of dollars in investment to exploit the mineral riches. But will the new-found wealth be shared with the people and improve Mozambique’s infrastructure or will it be creamed off by a small controlling elite?

THERE is little talk of Mozambique in Europe today, but it is one African country which could really take off as it may be sitting on vast natural gas reserves.

Its economic boom may have started already with 7.5 per cent growth.
