Portuguese group block Equatorial Guinea’s bid to join

Equatorial Guinea’s attempts to join the cultural group of Portuguese speaking countries has been blocked because it has failed to meet the membership criteria. Other member countries agreed to take a firm line rather than be accused of allowing rich countries - Equatorial Guinea has a small population and extensive oil exports - to ‘buy’ membership.
