A military victory 150 years ago has sparked protests and calls for a boycott of the Russian Federation’s first Olympics – the winter games to be held in the Black Sea port of Sochi in 2014. The Circassians were driven from their home in the Caucasus in 1864. Their descendants say athletes will be ‘skiing on the bones of their relatives’.

THE DECISION to hold the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia was a great personal triumph for President Vladimir Putin.

The chosen venue was Sochi, a sub-tropical resort on the Black Sea of legendary beauty, featuring promenades lined with palm trees, and snow-clad mountains in the background.
