Between the dark nadir of January 2026 and the almost buoyant optimism just a few months later, something fundamental changed on the Ukraine battlefront. The transition was almost imperceptible, yet it was profound. I watched Ukrainians move from a beleaguered siege mentality to a palpably optimistic, proactive mindset in which victory no longer felt like a fantasy.
The center of gravity shifted in favor of Kyiv – not because it suddenly gained battlefield superiority, but because Russia’s previous advantages in operational depth began to erode. Conversations began to revolve around offensive opportunities: striking deeper into Russia, disrupting logistics and shaping conditions for a more favorable end to the war.
The explanation lies only partly in events on the front itself. More importantly, the Ukrainians have largely perfected a new operational rhythm in the air war: the systematic use of domestically produced mid- and long-range unmanned systems against the Kremlin’s military infrastructure well beyond the front lines. They are doing in Russian airspace what they previously achieved in the Black Sea – stifling operational maneuver and rendering traditional force projection impossible.
Factories, fuel refineries, ammunition dumps, rail lines, command centers, aircraft shelters and defense-industrial facilities hundreds or even thousands of kilometers from the front have become targets of coordinated drone attacks. The campaign has fundamentally altered the operational geometry of the war.
This drone arsenal draws strength from a production base that has rapidly matured into self-sufficiency, enabling the reliable deployment of a full spectrum of platforms at scale. Ukraine has found a new strategic approach that is systematically hollowing out critical elements of Russia’s war effort.
Whether this shift ultimately proves decisive remains uncertain. Russia retains enormous reserves of manpower, industrial capacity and strategic depth. Yet it is increasingly difficult to dismiss Ukraine’s expanding mid- and deep-strike campaign as merely symbolic or psychological. It has begun to produce cumulative operational effects that resemble a classic campaign of battlefield air interdiction. One executed by inexpensive unmanned aircraft rather than fleets of strategic bombers. This may be the conflict’s most important development since Russia’s failure to capture Kyiv in 2022.

From tactical innovation to operational system
Commentary continues to emphasize the role of first-person-view (FPV) drones hunting individual soldiers or armored vehicles. Indeed, these systems remain enormously important. They have transformed the tactical battlefield, making concentrated assaults extraordinarily costly while reducing the likelihood of traditional armored breakthroughs.
But focusing on such tactical innovations risks overlooking the more consequential evolution underway. Ukraine’s advantage increasingly lies not in individual technologies but in its ability to integrate an entire ecosystem of unmanned systems operating across multiple ranges simultaneously. Short-range FPVs shape the close battlespace, while medium-range fixed-wing strike drones interdict logistics corridors, headquarters and communications networks. Long-range systems such as the Lyutyi and FP-series aircraft consistently strike strategic infrastructure hundreds or thousands of kilometers inside Russia. The advantage resides less in any individual platform than in the orchestration among them.
Military theorists such as B.H. Liddell Hart have long argued that victory depends not on directly destroying enemy frontline forces but on disrupting the systems that sustain them. Modern Western doctrine rests on this “battlefield air interdiction” (BAI) concept: attacking transportation networks, supply chains, command nodes and staging areas to limit their ability to support combat at the front. Historically, such campaigns required overwhelming air superiority, a luxury Ukraine has never possessed.
The ‘flip’ in operational depth
Ironically, it was Moscow that held the upper hand in BAI until recently. During multiple visits to eastern Ukraine over the past few years, the psychological impact of Russian operational strikes was impossible to ignore. I recall quite vividly the reactions – part jocular brush-off, part panic – as we hunkered under sparse cover while Russian Lancet drones interrupted our field training exercises near Kramatorsk. I recall as well the giant black sunflowers of Shahed strikes on the faces of residential apartment blocks. The Kremlin consistently imposed operational dilemmas well beyond the trenches: strategic interdiction coupled with crude attempts to sap the Ukrainians’ will through a haphazard terror campaign.
Ukraine largely endured these attacks, with very few effective, affordable countermeasures against the Kremlin’s superior BAI. As my colleague and counter-drone specialist Benjamin Remler has pointed out, that balance has now begun to reverse. “There is this weird period where the Russians [now] have a net disadvantage in the tactical and strategic theaters with regard to strike assets, whereas it’d been the other way around for the whole of the war.” The rapid rise of Ukraine’s counter-drone interceptor ecosystem since January has significantly dulled Russia’s relative advantages, especially against slow-moving Shahed, Lancet and Molniya attacks.

At the same time, the Ukrainian forces have replicated – and in many ways surpassed – the operational concepts Russia pioneered earlier in the conflict. Ukraine has bolstered its shield and honed its stabbing blades – deploying its own versions of mid- and long-range strike systems, notably the Lyuti, FP-1, FP-2 and FP-5 Flamingo. These advancements have countered Russia’s initial advantages. Moscow now finds itself (at least temporarily) unable to quickly scale up and implement the countermeasures that Kyiv deploys.
A window that can be opened may also be closed
Despite the current advantages Ukrainian troops possess, it would be premature to conclude that they have achieved anything like lasting strategic superiority.
Wars marked by rapid technological adaptation rarely allow enduring monopolies, after all, and Russian forces have repeatedly demonstrated their capacity for innovation, whether through electronic warfare, glide bombs or the early adoption of fiber-optic-guided FPV drones.
Countermeasures inevitably follow breakthroughs, and counter-countermeasures follow in ever quickening succession. The same process will almost certainly occur here – though it is comforting to acknowledge that Ukraine possesses a nimbler intellectual edge. Yet the same counter-drone revolution that may protect Russian refineries could also reopen Moscow’s maritime maneuver options.
All of this is precisely why the current moment may prove unusually important. If Ukraine’s expanding deep-strike campaign continues to succeed in degrading Russian logistics, exhausting air defenses and imposing cumulative operational disruption before Russia develops effective countermeasures, today’s temporary advantage could solidify into something like a strategically decisive shift.
Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said just before his ouster: “Right now we have a window of opportunity, and over the next six months we will have an advantage on the battlefield.” Such a view may be too sanguine. Russia’s defense innovation ecosystem, while hamstrung by centralization, can still access cutting-edge engineering talent. This talent can be supplemented with technical expertise in the Far East and backed by vast resources that can be pushed through even its corrupt and incompetent channels when the need is pressing enough.
Ukraine’s tech culture is evidently more dynamic, creative and evolutionary than Russia’s, but this does not guarantee a permanent lead. The strategic value of technical know-how depends upon exploiting temporary asymmetries before they disappear.

The real shift: Integrated drone operations
Much of the public discussion continues to portray Ukraine as the laboratory for robotic warfare, emphasizing autonomous vehicles, targeting enabled by artificial intelligence, ever-larger drone swarms and related developments.
To be sure, these developments are real, but they risk obscuring the more consequential transformation underway. The decisive innovation is not merely that drones have become more advanced, but that Ukraine has learned to employ them as an integrated operational system capable of reaching deep behind the battlefront, disrupting the enemy’s sustaining infrastructure and steadily shifting the conflict’s center of gravity. The historic deployment of a fully-autonomous amphibious assault is but the most recent example.
It is still unclear whether this shift will suffice in the short term to determine the war’s broader strategic direction. What appears increasingly certain, however, is that future military historians may look back on today’s developments not as the year robots replaced soldiers, but as the year inexpensive unmanned aircraft began performing strategic functions once reserved for fleets of exquisite combat aircraft.
Scenarios
Most likely: Russia’s counter-air defenses blunt Ukrainian deep strikes
By year’s end, Russian forces will have made substantial advances in defending against mid- and long-range attacks. Effective counter-aircraft weapons, mirroring (or likely directly copying) Ukraine’s suite of high-speed counter-drone interceptors, will suddenly begin to neutralize its advantages in operational depth. These interceptor fleets, likely backed by silent allies like China, will be integrated into a layered countermeasures suite that renders currently vulnerable targets, such as refineries and logistics hubs, far tougher nuts to crack.
Less likely: Russian Black Sea fleet makes a comeback
Given the rapid advances in counter-drone technology on both sides, there is a reasonable chance that Russia’s Black Sea Fleet will once again meaningfully enter the fray. Boxed into effective dry-dock by Ukraine’s use of Sea Baby and Magura-style sea drones, Russian forces are poised to develop and deploy a “drone shield” of interceptors that could once again enable naval operations. The implications for Kyiv’s campaign to isolate Crimea are significant – if Russia’s hands are suddenly freed to deploy its ballistic arsenal from surface and submarine vessels, there is a substantial risk of another shift in the strategic balance.
Least likely: Ukraine maintains short window to shatter Russian autocracy
Ukraine maintains its disproportionate advantage. As such, there is an urgent incentive to capitalize on a short window of opportunity (perhaps four months) to deliver a blow that could shatter the brittle Russian autocracy. If Ukraine is able to accelerate its attacks in the short term (while successfully navigating its internal political crisis), it may prompt a political crisis in Russia in turn. The Kremlin is adept at framing attacks as “unprovoked attacks by the West,” but it plays a delicate game: Public and/or oligarch disaffection can crystallize in an instant – and the Russian Federation may find itself on the brink of a post-Soviet-style collapse.
