Europe seems to be returning to the days of the Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union as Russia flexes its muscles and exerts its strengths in diplomacy and the military. It is a major geopolitical player with influence. Its annexation of Crimea has been virtually accepted. Its economy has proved resilient to Western sanctions and the drop in oil prices. Now it is influencing Middle East outcomes in Syria and Iran.
