Attempts to put relations between the United States and Venezuela back on a normal international footing could founder on Venezuela’s latest move to offer asylum to US whistleblower Edward Snowden. The Latin American state was one of three to offer Mr Snowden safe haven. American authorities want to prosecute him for divulging top secret information about America’s surveillance operations and spying missions. But the asylum offer is just one of a number of attempts to raise Venezuela’s profile on the international stage.
