Sochi 2014 Olympics – a show of strength for Russia’s President Putin
Few doubt the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in February 2014 will be a success. Costing more than US$50bn and with much political and personal capital input from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, the event cannot afford to fail. But opponents say Sochi is an expensive and corruption-ridden ego trip to show the world that Russia is back on the map. And observers question whether concerns over human rights, the fear of terrorist attacks, and the Kremlin’s harsh clampdown on protesters and activists, will scupper attempts to attract to Russia the foreign investment so desperately needed.
