Russia’s judiciary has been mired in accusations of corruption for years. Until recently, this was viewed as the way things have long been done. But now it threatens to deter investors from putting money into the country, particularly after the death of Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, in police custody. He had accused low ranking officials of corruption while he was working for the Hermitage Capital investment fund.

FOREIGN investors have long been ambivalent about opportunity in Russia. Market analysts regularly claim that the Russian stock market is valued at a discount, and that direct foreign investment is lower than it ought to be.
