The crisis in Ukraine is about to alter the global security architecture. The stand-off between Russia and the West could have been averted had Europe seen the crisis coming. The signs were there. When the dust has settled, perhaps the question historians will ask is how it was possible for the West to delude itself for so long into believing that it could walk over Russia and treat its leaders with contempt without having to pay a stiff price in the end.
