Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to go down in history as the man who stopped Russia’s decline. He views himself as its saviour and Ukraine is key to his plan to stop Russia’s enemies. The West is learning that Russia is willing to play for very high stakes - and economic costs - to win.

IT IS becoming more obvious and worrying that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a man on a mission as the destruction of Ukraine progresses.

Commentators have often noted his proclaimed ambition to restore Russia as a great power. Many have also underscored that from Moscow’s perspective, restoration of great power status cannot be achieved without incorporating Ukraine.
