As Russia re-arms, it is stepping up its rhetoric against the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, citing Nato’s exercises close to the Belarus border as evidence that it poses a military threat. The breakdown in relations between the two sides is bringing instability and insecurity to the region – and Nato’s missile shield plans are at the centre of the hostilities.

CONFIRMATION that Russia and Belarus will conduct joint military exercises, titled Zapad (West)-2013 in September 2013 sparked concern in neighbouring Poland and Lithuania.

Emotions are running high, with harsh accusations from both sides.
