The West’s enthusiastic support of the Syrian revolutionaries to bring down President Bashar al-Assad’s tyrannical regime has now been superceeded by doubt over the opposition’s long-term motives and the rebels’ ability to win the civil war – a victory which would help spread a fundamentlaist Sunni arc around the Mediterranean.
